Deaverdura doesn’t always list prices clearly, but the restaurant is budget-friendly. During our visit, a meal for three — including drinks, the Puerto Rican Sampler, sides, and a steak special — came to under $70. That makes it an excellent, affordable option for downtown Old San Juan.

Review on service and food from my husband

One highlight was a slow-cooked steak special, described by my husband as “incredible.” The dish had a distinct, slightly tangy flavor that lingered in a very good way. Even for someone skeptical about slow-cooked steak, this preparation was tender, flavorful, and memorable.

The staff were attentive and warm. A small, thoughtful gesture — offering to add rum to an unfinished drink rather than waste it — demonstrated the friendly, accommodating service we experienced.

Review from my son

Puerto Rican Rice Dish at Deaverdura Restaurant in Old San Juan

My son’s verdict was simple: “I love the rice.” Puerto Rico is known for its pearly, fluffy white rice, and Deaverdura’s version did not disappoint. We sampled several rice preparations — plain white, dirty rice from the sampler, and rice and beans with the steak — and enjoyed them all.

One memorable moment for him was watching the owner expertly open a stubborn coconut with a large knife. It was a slice of local culture and showmanship that made the meal even more fun and authentic.

What we tried and recommend:

  • Drinks (local beer and fruit punch for kids)
  • Puerto Rican Sampler — shareable appetizers including dirty rice, pulled pork, fried plantains, and croquettes
  • Steak special served with onions and rice and beans
  • Pearly white rice, a Puerto Rican staple
  • Desserts like flan and a plantain bread pudding reminiscent of cheesecake
