Oreo Balls

My oldest son is graduating from high school this week, and like many parents I’m riding a wave of emotions — pride, nostalgia and a little anxiety. When life feels overwhelming, I turn to the kitchen. Baking and creating treats is my calm zone.

Oreo Truffles are a go-to because they require no oven and are quick to make, yet look festive and taste indulgent. A light sprinkle of crushed cookie crumbs on top adds a pretty finishing touch.

I originally tried a limited-edition Oreo flavor (Fruit Punch) and loved it, but standard chocolate Oreos or seasonal varieties work perfectly. Use whatever flavor you prefer — mint and lemon are especially tasty options.

I hope you enjoy these Oreo Balls — they’re perfect for gatherings, gifts, or whenever you want a simple sweet bite.

Oreo Truffles Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

For this Oreo Truffles recipe, you will need the following three main ingredients and a few simple tools.

Ingredients

  • Oreo cookies — one 16 oz. package (about 45 cookies) of any flavor. These form the base of the truffles and a small amount of crumbs will be reserved for garnish. This recipe should also work with gluten-free sandwich cookies if needed.
  • Cream cheese — 8 oz., softened. Full-fat cream cheese gives the best texture; low-fat varieties can be too loose.
  • Candy melts or coating chocolate — about 16 oz. in any color you like for the outer shell. Choose a color or flavor that fits the occasion.

How many truffles does this recipe make?

About 48 truffles, depending on the size you make. For larger gatherings, consider doubling the recipe.

How long does it take to make Oreo Truffles?

Plan on roughly 30 minutes total: about 10 minutes prep and around 20 minutes for the coating to set.

Is there an efficient way to crush the Oreos without a food processor?

Cook: 20 mins
Total: 30 mins

Equipment

  • Cookie scoop
  • Rubber spatula or wooden spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Food processor or a sealed bag and rolling pin
  • Baking sheets lined with waxed paper

Ingredients

  • 1 package Oreos (16 oz. or about 45 cookies)
  • 1 package cream cheese, softened (8 oz.)
  • 1 package CandiQuik or candy melts (16 oz.)

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with waxed paper and set aside.
  • Place the Oreos in a food processor and pulse until fine crumbs form. Reserve 1/4 cup of the crumbs for garnish.
  • Mix the remaining crumbs with the softened cream cheese until well combined. Use a rounded teaspoon or small cookie scoop to form 1-inch balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Melt the candy coating according to package directions. Dip each ball into the melted coating, letting excess drip off, then return to the baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle a little of the reserved crumbs on top before the coating sets. Repeat for all balls and let them stand until firm.
  • Store truffles in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use any Oreo flavor you enjoy.
  • A 16-oz. package typically contains about 45 cookies; adjust if you buy a larger package.
  • Decorate with different candy melt colors or seasonal sprinkles to match holidays or events.
