One evening after driving home from Cavendish Square, my fiancé asked, “Want to go to Rhodes Memorial?” Before I could answer, we were already turning up the road toward the park.
We arrived about half an hour before the park closed, just in time to take in the best of it. Runners, cyclists and people climbing the steps moved through the space while I stood quietly, taking in the breathtaking panorama.
The view of Table Mountain and the city below, framed by the memorial, was unforgettable.
There is a small restaurant at the site, but it was closed when we visited, so we’ll need to return another day to enjoy lunch with that spectacular view.
Rhodes Memorial offers a compact, accessible spot to appreciate Cape Town’s landscape — a place where the energy of exercisers and the calm of the outlook coexist. Even a short visit leaves a strong impression: dramatic vistas, architectural detail in the memorial itself, and the steady rhythm of people making the most of the park. It’s an ideal stop for anyone who wants a quick dose of scenery without straying far from the city.
If you plan a visit, try to arrive with enough time to walk the paths and pause at the viewpoints. The memorial terraces provide multiple angles on Table Mountain and the urban spread, and early evening light often enhances the textures and colors of the scene. Save time to sit and absorb the atmosphere — and, if the on-site restaurant is open, to enjoy a meal with a memorable backdrop.
